Driving -> Driving with DSG? dual clutch gearbox for Your Volkswagen Transporter Van Seventh Generation (2021-2025)

Driving with DSG® dual clutch gearbox
The gearbox changes the forward gears up and down automatically.
Driving down hills
In the Tiptronic programme, note the following:The steeper the downhill gradient, the lower the gear that must be
selected. Lower gears increase the braking effect of the engine. Never allow the vehicle to roll down mountains or
hills in the neutral position N.
1. Reduce your speed.
2. Shift down using the paddles on the steering wheel (→ Tiptronic).
Stopping and pulling away on uphill gradients
In the Tiptronic programme, note the following:The steeper the incline, the lower the gear that is required.
If you wish to stop the vehicle or pull away when driving uphill you should use the Auto Hold function (→ Auto Hold
function).
®
Coasting with dual clutch gearbox DSG
In coasting mode, the momentum of the vehicle can be used to save fuel in conjunction with a foresighted driving
style. The engine no longer brakes the vehicle – the vehicle can roll for a longer distance. This function is only
available in selector lever position D, not when the accelerator pedal is pressed.
When coming to a stop without braking, the engine restarts automatically at “creeping speed”.
An automatic engine start may take place in order to ensure reliable engine restarting and to guarantee the power
supply of the vehicle electrical system.
Triggering coasting
1. Remove your foot from accelerator pedal. The engine is disengaged and runs in coasting mode. The vehicle rolls
without the braking effect of the engine.
Cancelling coasting mode
1. Depress the brake pedal.
Or: Depress the accelerator pedal briefly.
Or: Pull a paddle towards the steering wheel.
Kickdown function
The kickdown function enables maximum acceleration in selector lever positionsD and S or in the Tiptronic
programme.
If the accelerator pedal is depressed fully, the gearbox will automatically shift to a lower gear, depending on the
speed and engine revs. This will make use of the full vehicle acceleration →
.
The gearbox does not shift up to the next gear until the engine reaches the maximum engine speed for the gear.
Launch Control programme
210
The Launch Control Programme gives the vehicle maximum acceleration from a standing start.
1. Switch off TCS (→ Brake support systems).
2. Depress and hold the brake pedal with your left foot.
3. Engage position S or switch to the Tiptronic programme.
4. With your right foot, depress the accelerator until the engines speed reaches approximately 3,200 rpm.
5. Take your left foot off the brake. The vehicle will start with maximum acceleration.
6. Switch the TCS back on after acceleration.
WARNING
Rapid acceleration can cause loss of traction and skidding, particularly on slippery roads. This can cause you to lose
control of the vehicle, which can lead to accidents and serious injuries.
Always adapt your driving style to the traffic flow.
Only use the kickdown function or fast acceleration if visibility, weather, road and traffic conditions permit, and
other road users are not put at risk due to the acceleration and the driving style.
Please note that the driven wheels could start to spin and the vehicle could skid if the TCS is switched off,
especially if the road is slippery.
Switch the TCS back on after the acceleration.
Only use the Launch Control Program if the road and traffic conditions allow for it.
WARNING
Constant braking will cause the brakes to overheat. This can considerably reduce the brake effect, increase the
braking distance and, in certain circumstances, cause the brake system to fail completely.
Never “ride” the brake pedal or press the brake pedal too often or for too long.
NOTICE
If the vehicle is prevented from rolling away by accelerating when stopped on inclines with a gear selector position
engaged, the dual-clutch gearbox® can overheat and sustain damage.
Use the electronic parking brake or the Auto Hold function to hold the vehicle on an incline.
NOTICE
If the vehicle rolls in the neutral positionN, the dual clutch gearbox® is not lubricated and can sustain damage.
Never allow the vehicle to roll in the neutral positionN.
NOTICE
Allowing the brakes to rub increases wear.
Never let the brakes rub by applying light pressure to the brake pedal.
Troubleshooting
Gearbox overheated
The indicator lamp lights up yellow.
An acoustic warning may also be given. A text notification may also be shown on the instrument cluster display.
The DSG® dual clutch gearbox can become too hot, for example, if the vehicle regularly pulls off from the starting
position, during long periods at “crawling” speed, or in stop-and-go traffic.
1.
Do not drive on!
211
2. Allow the gearbox to cool down with the parking lockP engaged →
3. Do not drive on if the indicator lamp does not go out.
.
4. Seek expert assistance. Failure to do so could result in considerable damage to the gearbox.
The engine will not start
The indicator lamp lights up green.
Brake pedal was not depressed, e.g. when trying to engage another position with the selector lever.
1. To select a position, press the brake pedal.
See also Electronic parking brake .
Releasing the selector lever lock manually
If the power fails in the vehicle(for example if the 12-volt battery is flat)and the vehicle has to be towed, the selector
lever lock must be released manually. Seek expert assistance.
Emergency program
There is a fault in the system if all the displays on the instrument cluster for the selector lever positions have a light
background. The DSG® dual clutch gearbox is running in an emergency programme. The vehicle can still be driven in
the emergency programme, but only at reduced speed and not in all gears.
In vehicles with a DSG® dual clutch gearbox, you may no longer be able to select reverse gear.
®
1. In all cases you should have the DSG dual clutch gearbox checked by a correspondingly qualified workshop
immediately.
Vehicle does not move even though position is engaged
If the vehicle will not move in the required direction, the system may have selected the position incorrectly.
1. Depress the brake pedal and reselect the position.
2. If the vehicle still does not move in the required direction, there is a system fault. Seek expert assistance and
have the system checked.
WARNING
Never release the parking lock when the electronic parking brake is switched off. Otherwise the vehicle could move
unexpectedly if it is stopped on an incline, which could lead to accidents and serious injuries.
NOTICE
If the vehicle rolls for an extended period or at high speed with the engine switched off and the selector lever in the
neutral position N, the DSG® dual clutch gearbox will be damaged, e.g. during towing.
NOTICE
If the display indicates that the gearbox is overheating for the first time, make sure that the vehicle is parked
safely or drive faster than 20 km/h (12 mph).
Safely park the vehicle immediately and switch off the engine if the text message and acoustic signal are
repeated approximately every 10 seconds. Allow the gearbox to cool down.
Do not drive on until the acoustic signal stops. This will prevent damage to the vehicle. You should avoid pulling
212
away or driving the vehicle at very low speeds while the gearbox is overheated.
Hill Start Assist
The Hill Start Assist function actively holds the vehicle when pulling away on an uphill gradient.
Activating Hill Start Assist automatically
The following conditions must be metsimultaneously to automatically activate Hill Start Assist:
On an incline, the stationary vehicle must be held in position with the footbrake until you are ready to move off.
The engine is running “smoothly”.
Drive position D or reverse gear has been selected.
To start moving, remove your foot from the brake pedal and press the accelerator immediatelyT. he brake will
gradually be released as the vehicle pulls away.
Deactivating Hill Start Assist
If one of the following conditions is no longer met, Hill Start Assist is deactivated immediately:
If the engine is not running smoothly or there is an engine fault.
If the engine is switched off or has stalled.
If the neutral position N is engaged.
As soon as one of the tyres has insufficient contact with the ground, e.g. if the vehicle is standing at an angle to the
fall line.
CAUTION
If you do not drive off immediately after releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle may roll backwards. In this case,
press the brake pedal immediately or switch on the electronic parking brake.
Immediately press the brake pedal or engage the electronic parking brake when the engine stops.
Press the brake pedal for a few seconds before driving off if you want to prevent the vehicle from rolling
backwards when driving off in heavy traffic on an incline.
