Safety -> Active Protection for Your BMW X6 4 Door Second Generation (2015-2019)

Safety
Controls
Acute warning
Brake force display
If the turn signal is set while a vehicle is in the
critical zone, the steering wheel vibrates briefly
and the lamp in the exterior mirror housing
flashes brightly.
Concept
Additional brake lamps indicate emergency
braking to the traffic behind. This can reduce
the risk of a rear-end collision.
The warning stops when the turn signal is
switched off, or the other vehicle leaves the
critical zone.
General information
Brief flashing
A brief flashing of the lamp during vehicle un‐
locking serves as system self-test.
System limits
Safety information
WARNING
During normal brake application, the bot‐
tom brake lights light up.
The system can react not at all, too late,
incorrectly, or without justification due to the
system limits. There is a risk of accidents or
risk of damage to property. Follow the informa‐
tion regarding the system limits and actively
intervene, if needed.◀
During heavy brake application, the top
brake lights additionally light up.
Active Protection
Functional limitations
The system may not be fully functional in the
following situations:
General information
The Active Protection safety package consists
of systems that are independent of each other:
When a vehicle is approaching at a speed
much faster than your own.
Attentiveness assistant.
PreCrash.
In heavy fog, wet conditions, or snowfall.
In tight curves or on narrow lanes.
PostCrash.
If the bumper is dirty, iced up, or covered,
for instance by stickers.
Attentiveness assistant
Concept
The system can detect decreasing alertness or
fatigue of the driver during long, monotonous
trips, e.g., on highways. In this situation, it is
recommended that the driver takes a break.
If cargo protrudes.
A Check Control message is displayed when
the system is not fully functional.

Controls
Safety
When the vehicle speed is mainly below
about 43 mph/70 km/h.
Safety information
WARNING
With a sporty driving style, such as during
rapid acceleration or when cornering fast.
The system does not relieve from per‐
sonal responsibility to assess one's physical
state. An increasing lack of alertness or fatigue
may not be detected or not be detected in
time. There is a risk of an accident. Make sure
that the driver is rested and alert. Adjust driv‐
ing style to traffic conditions.◀
In active driving situations, such as when
changing lanes frequently.
When the road surface is poor.
In the event of strong side winds.
The system is reset approx. 45 minutes after
parking the vehicle, e.g., in the case of a break
during longer trips on highways.
Function
The system is activated each time the engine
is started and cannot be switched off.
PreCrash
After travel has begun, the system monitors
certain aspects of the driver's behavior, so that
decreasing alertness or fatigue can be de‐
tected.
The concept
With this system critical driving situations that
might result in an accident can be detected
above a speed of approx. 20 mph/30 km/h. In
these situations, preventive measures are au‐
tomatically taken to minimize the risk of an ac‐
cident as much as possible.
This procedure takes the following criteria into
account:
Personal driving style, e.g., steering behav‐
ior.
Critical driving situations may include:
Driving conditions, e.g., length of trip.
Emergency stop.
Starting at approximately 43 mph/70 km/h, the
system is active and can display a recommen‐
dation to take a break.
Severe understeering.
Severe oversteering.
If the vehicle includes the front-end collision
warning or front-end collision warning with
braking feature, impending collisions with vehi‐
cles driving ahead or stopped in front of you
can also be detected within the system's
range.
Break recommendation
If the driver becomes less alert or fatigued, a
message is displayed in the Control Display
with the recommendation to take a break.
A recommendation to take a break is displayed
only once during an uninterrupted trip.
Safety information
After a break, another recommendation to take
a break cannot be displayed until after approxi‐
mately 45 minutes.
WARNING
The system does not relieve from per‐
sonal responsibility. Due to the system limits,
critical situation could not be detected reliably
or in time. There is a risk of an accident. Adjust
driving style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic
closely and actively intervene where appropri‐
ate.◀
System limits
The function may be limited in the following
situations, e.g., and will either output an incor‐
rect warning or no warning at all:
When the clock is set incorrectly.

Safety
Controls
Function
Interrupting automatic braking
After the safety belt is buckled, the front safety
belts are automatically tightened once after the
vehicle drove off.
It can be necessary to interrupt automatic
braking in certain situations, for example for an
evasive maneuver.
In critical driving situations, the following indi‐
vidual functions become active as needed:
Interrupt automatic braking:
By pressing the brake pedal.
The front safety belts are automatically
pretensioned.
By pressing the accelerator pedal.
Automatic closing of the windows.
At standstill
After coming to a halt, the brake is released
automatically.
Automatic closing of the glass sunroof.
For vehicles equipped with Comfort Seats:
automatic positioning of the backrest for
the front passenger seat.
After a critical driving situation without an acci‐
dent, the front safety belts are loosened again.
All other systems can be restored to the de‐
sired setting.
If the belt tension does not loosen automati‐
cally, stop the vehicle and unbuckle the safety
belt using the red button in the buckle. Fasten
the safety belt before continuing on your trip.
PostCrash
Concept
In the event of an accident, the system can
bring the vehicle to a halt automatically without
intervention by the driver in certain situations.
This can reduce the risk of a further collision
and the consequences thereof.
Harder vehicle braking
It can be necessary to bring the vehicle in cer‐
tain situations to a halt quicker.
To do this, for a short time the braking pres‐
sure applied when stepping on the brake pedal
must be higher than the braking pressure ach‐
ieved by the automatic braking function. This
interrupts automatic braking.
