Depending on the vehicle, they may

comprise:

computers, wiring) and the sys-

tem components must not be

reused on any other vehicle,

even if identical.

– Only qualified personnel from

our Network may work on the

Airbags; otherwise the system

may trigger accidentally and

cause injury.

These systems are designed to act

independently or together when the

vehicle is subjected to a frontal im-

pact.

Depending on the severity of the im-

pact, the system can cause:

– blocking of the seat belt;

– the seat belt inertia reel preten-

sioner which is triggered to correct

seat belt slack;

The pretensioners hold the seat belt

against the body, holding the occu-

pant more securely against the seat,

thus increasing the seat belt's effi-

ciency.

– The electrical trigger system

may only be tested by a special-

ly trained technician using spe-

cial equipment.

– When the vehicle is scrapped,

contact an approved dealer for

disposal of the pretensioner

and Airbags gas generators.

In the event of a severe frontal im-

pact and if the ignition is switched

on, the system may engage the fol-

lowing depending on the force of the

impact:

– the lap seat belt pretensioner to

hold the occupant in their seat;

– the front airbag.

– the seat belt inertia reel preten-

sioner 1 which instantly retracts the

seat belt;

– the lap seat belt inertia reel pre-

tensioner 2 on the front seats.

Load limiter

Above a certain severity of impact,

this mechanism is used to limit the

force of the belt against the body so

that it is at an acceptable level.

Operation

The airbag system us-

es pyrotechnic princi-

ples. This explains why,

This system is only operational when

the ignition is switched on.

In a severe frontal impact, the

airbags inflate rapidly, cushioning

the impact of the driver's head and

chest against the steering wheel

and of the front passenger against

the dashboard. The airbags then de-

flate immediately so that the pas-

sengers are not in any way prevent-

ed from leaving the vehicle.

Fitted to the driver and passenger

sides.

A symbol on the lower section of the

windscreen indicates if this equip-

ment is present (depending on the

vehicle).

when the airbag in-

flates, it will generate heat, pro-

duce smoke (this does not

mean that a fire is about to

start) and sound like a detona-

tion. In a situation where an

airbag deployment is required,

it will inflate immediately and

this may cause some minor, su-

perficial grazing to the skin or

other problems.

Each airbag system consists of:

– an airbag and gas generator fitted

on the steering wheel for the driver

and in the dashboard for the front

passenger;

Operating faults

– an electronic unit for monitoring

the system controlling the gas gen-

erator electrical trigger;

This warning light comes on

when the engine is started and then

goes out after approximately three

seconds.

– remote sensors;

warning light on the

instrument panel.

If it does not come on when the igni-

tion is switched on or if it stays on,

there is a fault in the system.

Contact your approved Dealer as

soon as possible;

Your protection will be reduced until

this fault is rectified.

The following cases trigger the pre-

tensioners or airbags.

In a frontal impact against a rigid

(non-deformable) surface at an im-

pact speed equal to or greater than

16 mph (25 km/h).

In the event of a frontal impact with

another vehicle of an equivalent or

higher category, with an impact

area equal to or greater than 40%,

where the speed of both vehicles is

equal to or greater than 25 mph (40

km/h).

In a side impact with another vehicle

of an equivalent or higher category,

at an impact speed equal to or

greater than 31 mph (50 km/h).

The pretensioners or airbags may be

triggered in the following cases:

– an impact underneath the vehicle

(e.g. pavement kerb);

– potholes;

– a drop or hard landing;

– stones;

– ...

In the following examples, the pre-

tensioners or airbags might not be

triggered:

– a rear impact, however severe;

– the vehicle overturning;

– side impact at the front or rear of

the vehicle;

– frontal impact, underneath the tail

of a lorry;

– frontal impact against an obsta-

cle with a sharp angle;

– ...

Warnings

All of the warnings below are given so that the airbagis not obstructed in any way when it is inflated and also to prevent

the risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when it inflates.

Warnings in relation to the driver's airbag

– Do not modify the steering wheel or the boss.

– Do not cover the steering wheel boss under any circumstances.

– Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, watch, telephone cradle, etc.) to the steering wheel boss.

– The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnel from our Network).

– Do not sit too close to the steering wheel: sit with your arms slightly bent (see "Adjusting your driving position"

ꢀ 55). This will allow sufficient space for the airbag to deploy correctly and be fully effective.

Warnings in relation to the passenger's airbag

– Do not attach or glue any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to the dashboard over or near the

airbag.

– Do not place anything between the dashboard and the passenger (animal, umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).

– The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as there is a risk that serious injuries may be

sustained. As a general rule, parts of the body should be kept away from the dashboard (knees, hands, head, etc.).

– the devices in addition to the front passenger seat belt should be reactivated as soon as a child seat is removed,

to ensure the protection of the passenger in the event of an impact.

A REAR-FACING CHILD SEAT MUST NOT BE FITTED TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT UNLESS THE ADDITIONAL RE-

STRAINT SYSTEMS ARE NOT DEACTIVATED ꢀ 92.

With the ignition on, following a sig-

nificant frontal impact and depend-

ing on the severity of the impact, the

system may trigger the seat belt in-

ertia reel pretensioner 1 which in-

stantly retracts the seat belt.

the sides of the seats (door side) to

protect the occupants in the event

of a severe side impact.

– The airbag is deployed

through slits in the front seat-

backs (door side): never insert

any objects into these slits.

Fitting seat covers:

Curtain airbag

seats equipped with an airbag

require covers specifically de-

signed for your vehicle. Contact

an approved dealer to find out if

these covers are available. The

use of any covers other than

those designed for your vehicle

(including those designed for

another vehicle) may affect the

operation of the airbag and re-

duce your protection.

This is an airbag fitted (depending

on the vehicle) along the upper sides

of the vehicle – they inflate along the

front and rear door side windows to

protect the passengers in the event

of a severe side impact.

– Do not place any accessories,

objects or even pets between

the seatback, the door and the

internal fittings. Do not cover

the seatback with objects such

as clothes or accessories. This

may prevent the airbag from

operating correctly or cause in-

jury when the airbag is de-

ployed.

– No work or modification

whatsoever may be carried out

on the seat or internal fittings,

except by qualified personnel

from our Network.

Additional methods of restraint

All of the following warnings are intended to ensure that the airbag is not obstructed in any way when it is inflated and

also to prevent the risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be projected when it inflates.

The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the airbag and the seat belt are inte-

gral parts of the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear seat belts at all times. If seat belts

are not worn, the occupants are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. It may also

increase the risk of minor superficial injuries occurring when the airbag is deployed, although such minor in-

juries are always possible with airbags.

If the vehicle should overturn or suffer a rear impact, however severe, the pretensioners and airbags are not always

triggered. Shocks to the underbody of the vehicle, from pavements, potholes, stones etc. can all trigger these sys-

tems.

– Any work or modification on any part of the airbag (airbags, pretensioners, computer, wiring harness, etc.) is strict-

ly prohibited (except by qualified personnel from the network).

– To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid accidental triggering of the system which may

cause injury, only qualified personnel from the network may work on an airbag system.

– As a safety precaution, have the airbag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, or is

stolen or broken into.

– When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the new purchaser of these conditions when handing over this vehicle

user manual.

– When scrapping your vehicle, contact your approved dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).
