Pretensioners

Methods of restraint in addi-

tion to the front seat belts

– Have the entire re-

straint system checked

They consist of:

– seat belt inertia reel pretension-

ers;

– lap seat belt pretensioners;

– chest force limiters;

– airbags driver and passenger

front.

These systems are designed to act

independently or together when the

vehicle is subjected to a frontal im-

pact.

Depending on the severity of the im-

pact, the system can cause:

– blocking of the seat belt;

– the seat belt inertia reel preten-

sioner which is triggered to correct

seat belt slack;

– the lap seat belt pretensioner to

hold the occupant in their seat;

– the front airbag.

– No operation whatsoever is

permitted on any part of the

system (pretensioners, airbags,

computers, wiring) and the sys-

tem components must not be

reused on any other vehicle,

even if identical.

– Only qualified personnel from

our Network may work on the

pretensioners and airbags, oth-

erwise the system may trigger

accidentally and cause injury.

– The electrical trigger system

may only be tested by a special-

ly trained technician using spe-

cial equipment.

The pretensioners hold the seat belt

against the body, holding the occu-

pant more securely against the seat,

thus increasing the seat belt's effi-

ciency.

In the event of a severe frontal im-

pact and if the ignition is switched

on, the system may engage the fol-

lowing depending on the force of the

impact:

– If scrapping your vehicle, con-

tact an approved dealer for dis-

posal of the gas generator of

the pretensioners and airbags.

– the seat belt inertia reel preten-

sioner 1 which instantly retracts the

seat belt;

– the lap seat belt inertia reel pre-

tensioner 2 on the front seats.

Load limiter

Above a certain severity of impact,

this mechanism is used to limit the

force of the belt against the body so

that it is at an acceptable level.

Each airbag system consists of:

– an airbag and gas generator fitted

on the steering wheel for the driver

and in the dashboard for the front

passenger;

– an electronic unit for monitoring

the system controlling the gas gen-

erator electrical trigger;

Operating faults

tion is switched on or if it stays on,

there is a fault in the system.

Your protection will be reduced until

this fault is rectified.

In the event of a frontal impact with

another vehicle of an equivalent or

higher category, with an impact

area equal to or greater than 40%,

where the speed of both vehicles is

equal to or greater than 25 mph (40

km/h).

In a side impact with another vehicle

of an equivalent or higher category,

at an impact speed equal to or

greater than 31 mph (50 km/h).

The following cases trigger the pre-

tensioners or Airbags.

In a frontal impact against a rigid

(non-deformable) surface at an im-

pact speed equal to or greater than

16 mph (25 km/h).

The pretensioners or Airbags may

be triggered by:

– an impact underneath the vehicle

(e.g. pavement kerb);

– potholes;

– a drop or hard landing;

– stones;

– ...

The pretensioners or Airbags may

not be triggered by:

– a rear impact, however severe;

– the vehicle overturning;

– side impact at the front or rear of

the vehicle;

– frontal impact, underneath the tail

of a lorry;

– frontal impact against an obsta-

cle with a sharp angle;

– ...

All of the warnings below are given

so that the airbagis not obstructed

in any way when it is inflated and al-

so to prevent the risk of serious in-

juries caused by items which may be

dislodged when it inflates.

Warnings in relation to the driver's airbag

– Do not modify the steering wheel or the boss.

– Do not cover the steering wheel boss under any circumstances.

– Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, watch, telephone cradle, etc.) to the steering wheel boss.

– The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnel from our Network).

– Do not sit too close to the steering wheel: sit with your arms slightly bent (see "Adjusting your driving position"

ꢀ 84). This will allow sufficient space for the airbag to deploy correctly and be fully effective.

Warnings in relation to the passenger airbag

– Fitting seat covers on the front seats is prohibited as this could affect the operation of the passenger airbag.

– Do not attach or glue any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to the dashboard on or near the

airbag.

– Do not place anything between the dashboard and the passenger (animal, umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).

– The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as there is a risk that serious injuries may be

sustained. As a general rule, parts of the body should be kept away from the dashboard (knees, hands, head, etc.).

– Any operation on the entire

system (pretensioners, airbags,

electronic units, wiring) or re-

use on any other vehicle, even

identical, is strictly prohibited.

– To avoid the system trigger-

ing accidentally and causing in-

jury, only qualified personnel

from the brand network may

work on the pretensioners and

airbags.

– The electrical trigger system

may only be tested by a special-

ly trained technician using spe-

cial equipment.

– If the vehicle is scrapped, con-

tact an approved dealer to dis-

pose of the gas generator of the

pretensioners and airbags.

This airbag is fitted to each of the

front seats and is activated at the

side impact.

Curtain airbag

This airbag fitted in the ceiling along

each side of the vehicle. They inflate

along the front and rear door side

windows to protect the passengers

in the event of a severe side impact.

Central airbag

This airbag fitted to the driver's seat

and deployed between the driver's

seat and the passenger seat in order

to protect the driver and passenger

in the event of a severe side impact.

It also spreads out to protect the dri-

ver, if they are the only one in the

front, in the event of a severe side

impact.

Warning relating to the passengerairbag side airbag and theairbag central airbag

Fitting seat covers on the front seats is prohibited as this could hinder the operation of the passenger

–

airbag status.

– Do not place any accessories, objects or even pets between the seatback, the door and the internal fittings. Do not

cover the seatback with objects such as clothes or accessories. This could hinder the operation of theairbag or lead

to injury during inflation.

– Do not drive with the central armrest in the open position as this could hinder the operation of theairbag and/or

lead to injury during inflation.

– Do not place any object(s) on the central armrest compartment cover as this could hinder the operation of

theairbag and/or lead to injury during inflation.

– Do not leave any object(s) protruding from the central armrest compartment as this could hinder the operation of

theairbag and/or lead to injury during inflation.

– No work or modification whatsoever may be carried out on the seat or internal fittings, except by qualified person-

nel from our Network.

– The slits on the front seatbacks (door side and centre console side) correspond to the airbags deployment zone:

never insert any objects into these slits.

Additional methods of restraint

All of the warnings below are given so that the airbagis not obstructed in any way when it is inflated and also to prevent

the risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when it inflates.

The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the airbag and the seat belt are inte-

gral parts of the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear seat belts at all times. If seat belts

are not worn, the occupants are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. It may also

increase the risk of minor superficial injuries occurring when the airbag is deployed, although such minor in-

juries are always possible with airbags.

If the vehicle should overturn or suffer a rear impact, however severe, the pretensioners and airbags are not always

triggered. Shocks to the underbody of the vehicle, from pavements, potholes, stones etc. can all trigger these sys-

tems.

– Any work or modification on any part of the airbag (airbags, pretensioners, computer, wiring harness, etc.) is strict-

ly prohibited (except by qualified personnel from the network).

– To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid accidental triggering of the system which may

cause injury, only qualified personnel from the network may work on an airbag system.

– As a safety precaution, have the airbag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, or is

stolen or broken into.

– When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the new purchaser of these conditions when handing over this vehicle

user manual.

– When scrapping your vehicle, contact your approved dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).
