ENGINE OIL  
5. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean.  
6. Reinsert the dipstick all the way.

Avoid direct skin contact with used oil. If  
contacted, wash thoroughly with soap or  
hand cleaner and plenty of water as soon as  
possible.  
CHECKING ENGINE OIL LEVEL  
7. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. It

should be within the range

Store used engine oil in marked containers  
out of the reach of children.

8. If the oil level is below

, remove the oil filler cap  
and pour the recommended oil into the opening.  
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the  
parking brake.

When filling the engine oil, do not remove  
the dipstick. (except for HR15DE and  
HR16DE engine)  
2. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine  
temperature reaches the normal operating tem-  
perature (approximately 5 minutes).  
9. Recheck the oil level with the dipstick.

3. Stop the engine.  
It is normal to add some oil between oil  
maintenance intervals or during the break-in  
period, depending on the severity of operat-  
ing conditions.  
MR16DDT engine and HR16DE (for Thailand) models  
4. Wait at least 10 minutes for the engine oil to drain  
back to the oil pan.  
5. Raise and support the vehicle using a suitable  
floor jack and safety jack stands.  
CAUTION:  
.
Place the safety jack stands under the vehicle  
jack-up points.  
The oil level should be checked regularly.  
Operating your vehicle with an insufficient  
amount of oil can damage the engine, and such  
damage is not covered by the warranty.

A suitable adapter should be attached to the  
jack stand saddle.  
Engine oil and filter

CHANGING ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER  
HR16DE (except for Thailand) and HR15DE engine  
models  
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the  
parking brake.  
WARNING:  
.
Used oil must be disposed of properly. Never  
pour or dump oil into the ground, canals,  
rivers, etc. It should be disposed of at proper  
waste facilities. NISSAN recommends hav-  
ing your oil changed by a NISSAN dealer.  
2. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine  
temperature reaches the normal operating tem-  
perature (approximately 5 minutes).  
3. Stop the engine.

Be careful not to burn yourself, as the  
engine oil may be hot.  
4. Wait at least 10 minutes for the engine oil to drain  
back to the oil pan.

Prolonged and repeated contact with used  
engine oil may cause skin cancer.

13. Check the drain plug for any sign of leakage.  
CAUTION:  
14. Dispose of the used oil in the proper manner.  
Check your local regulations.  
Waste oil must be disposed of properly. Check  
your local regulations.  
15. Check the engine oil level according to the proper  
procedure. (See “Checking engine oil level” (P.8-  
8).)  
4. Loosen the oil filter with an oil filter wrench.  
5. Remove the oil filter by turning it by hand.  
After the operation  
1. Lower the vehicle carefully to the ground.  
6. Wipe the engine oil filter mounting surface with a  
clean cloth.  
Be sure to remove any old gasket remaining on the  
mounting surface.  
2. Dispose of waste oil and filter properly.

MR16DDT engine models  
7. Apply new engine oil to the gasket of the new oil  
filter.  
8. Screw in the oil filter until a slight resistance is felt  
and then tighten an additional 2/3 of a turn to  
secure the filter.  
Oil filter tightening torque:  
15 to 20 N·m  
(1.5 to 2.0 kg-m, 11 to 15 ft-lb)  
9. Clean and reinstall the drain plug and new washer.  
Securely tighten the drain plug with a wrench. Do  
not use excessive force.

HR16DE and HR15DE engine models

Drain plug tightening torque:  
29 to 39 N·m  
(3.0 to 4.0 kg-m, 22 to 29 ft-lb)

10. Refill the recommended engine oil and quantity.  
(See “Recommended fluids/lubricants and capa-  
cities” (P.9-2).)  
1. Place a large drain pan under the drain plug.  
2. Remove the drain plug with a wrench.  
3. Remove the oil filler cap and completely drain the  
oil.  
When filling the engine oil, do not remove  
the dipstick.  
If the oil filter is to be changed, remove and  
replace it at this time.  
11. Securely install the oil filler cap.  
12. Start the engine.
