Removing and installing front side air‐  
bag, outer side  
The side airbag with side airbag igniter on driver side - N199- or  
side airbag igniter on front passenger side - N200- will hence‐  
forth be referred to as “side airbag”.  
Removal and installation are described for the left side of vehi‐  
cle as an example.  
Removing  
– Disconnect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.  
gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .  
– Remove backrest padding in area of side airbag ⇒ Rep.  
gr. 74 ; Separating backrest cover from backrest padding .

CAUTION  
It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentional‐  
ly.  
Risk of injury  
– Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker  
plate.  
– Release connector lock -3- in direction of -arrow-.  
– Disconnect electrical connector -2-.  
– Unscrew bolt -1-.  
– Detach side airbag -4- from hook -5-, and remove it.

WARNING  
Risk of injury due to unintended deployment of the airbag unit.  
– Place the airbag unit with the airbag facing upwards.  
– Place side airbag aside.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentional‐  
ly.  
Risk of injury  
– Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker  
plate.

– Connect electrical connector -1- in direction of -arrow A- until  
it engages audibly.  
– Engage connector lock -2- in direction of -arrow B-.  
– Make sure that electrical wire is not trapped.  
– Connect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.  
gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .  
CAUTION

Pyrotechnic components can trigger unintentionally.  
Risk of injury.  
– Keep far away from pyrotechnic components when switch‐  
ing on ignition.  
– Switch on ignition.  
– Read and clear event memory using ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic  
tester.  
Tightening torques

Removing and installing front inner  
side airbag  
Side airbag with igniter for central airbag for occupant collision  
protection, driver side - N737- will henceforth be referred to as  
“side airbag”.  
Removing  
– Disconnect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.  
gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .  
– ⇒ Rep. gr. 74 ; Separate backrest cover from backrest  
padding .

CAUTION  
It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentional‐  
ly.  
Risk of injury

– Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker  
plate.  
NOTICE  
Risk of irreparable damage due to electrostatic discharge.  
– Do not touch connector contacts with your hands.  
– Touch the lifting platform or other earthed object to dis‐  
charge static electricity.  
– Disconnect electrical connector -4-.  
– Unscrew bolts -1- and -5-.  
– Unclip clip -2- with side airbag -3-.  
– Unhook side airbag -2- from mountings -1-, and remove it.  
WARNING  
Risk of injury due to unintended deployment of the airbag unit.  
– Place the airbag unit with the airbag facing upwards.  
– Place side airbag -2- down.

Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
