Descriptions of work -> Toothed belt: Checking for wear (diesel engine ?2000) for Your Volkswagen Lupo 2 Door First Generation (1998-2005)

Lupo 1999 ➤ , Lupo 3L 1999 ➤  
Maintenance - Edition 03.2018  
Removing:  
– Pull off plastic cover -1-.  
– From the right-hand side of plenum chamber cover pull rubber  
seal -2- off upwards to vehicle centre.  
– Unscrew bolts -3- and remove cover -4-.  
– Unclip cover cap in front of lugs -B- and remove (if fitted).  
– Press filter housing lugs -B- in -direction of arrow- and take  
filter element with frame out upwards.  
– Separate filter element from frame.  
Note  
Observe environmental regulations for disposal.  
Installing:  
– Guide frame -A- on left and right into the first lamination of the  
new filter element -arrows B-.  
– Guide frame lugs -A- into filter housing recesses -B- and press  
frame with filter element downwards.  
– If necessary clip in cover cap in front of lugs -B-.  
– Tighten plenum chamber cover and press on rubber seal.

Maintenance - Edition 03.2018  
♦ Vernier caliper (commercially available)  
Carry out following procedure:  
– Open clips -1- on upper toothed belt guard.  
– Unhook toothed belt guard -2- and pull to side.  
– Measure the width of the toothed belt with a vernier caliper.  
Wear limit: 21 mm  
Note  
When a toothed belt has reached a width of 21 mm, the wear limit  
has been reached and it must be renewed (repair measure). In‐  
form customer!  
WARNING  
The engine must never under any circumstances be turned  
over using the camshaft when checking and making adjust‐  
ments. Not observing this can lead to severe engine damage.

Engine codes AMF, ANY  
Special tools and workshop equipment required  
♦ Workshop vernier caliper - VAS 5276-  
Carry out following procedure:

– Pull out oil dipstick -1- and remove oil filler cap -2-.  
– Unclip engine cover and remove upwards.  
– Open clips -1- on upper toothed belt guard.  
– Unhook toothed belt guard -2- and pull to side.  
– Measure the width of toothed belt with a workshop vernier cal‐  
iper - VAS 5276- .  
Wear limit: 27 mm  
Note  
When a toothed belt has reached a width of 27 mm, the wear limit  
has been reached and it must be renewed (repair measure). In‐  
form customer!  
WARNING  
The engine must never under any circumstances be turned  
over using the camshaft when checking and making adjust‐  
ments. Not observing this can lead to severe engine damage.

Camshaft drive toothed belt: Checking  
(4-cylinder petrol engine)  
Toothed belt: checking condition  
– Open clips for upper toothed belt guard and remove cover.  
– Check condition of toothed belt for:  
♦ Cracks, cross sectional breaks  
♦ Layer separation (toothed belt body, tensile cords)  
♦ Toothed belt body breakup  
♦ Frayed cord strands  
♦ Surface cracks (synthetic coating)  
♦ Traces of oil and grease
