Dash panel cross member will henceforth be referred to as  
“cross member”.  
Removal and installation are described for a left-hand drive  
vehicle as an example.  
Removing  
– Remove plenum chamber cover ⇒ General body repairs,  
exterior; Rep. gr. 50 ; Plenum chamber bulkhead; Removing  
and installing plenum chamber cover .  
– Remove dash panel ⇒ Rep. gr. 70 ; Removing and instal‐  
ling dash panel .

– Mark installation position of cross member for reinstallation.

– Unscrew bolts -1-.

– Unscrew nut -2-.

– Unscrew bolt -1-.  
– Unscrew nut -2-.

– Move aside wiring harness on cross member.  
– Detach cross member, and slightly pull it towards rear.  
Important  
The aid of an additional person is required for the subse‐  
quent work steps.  
– Remove cross member.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
NOTICE  
Malfunctions due to poor earth.  
– Keep earth points free of paint, coatings and corrosion.  
– The contact surfaces between the left and right tunnel sup‐  
ports and the tunnel must be paint-free on both sides.  
– Bring cross member into installation position.

– Connect electrical connectors until they engage audibly.  
– Make sure that no electrical wires are trapped.  
Tightening torques

Removing and installing crash bar  
Removing  
– Remove dash panel trim on driver side ⇒ Rep. gr. 68 ;  
Removing and installing dash panel trim on driver side .  
– Remove lower steering column trim ⇒ Rep. gr. 68 ; Remov‐

ing and installing lower steering column trim .  
– Remove footwell cover on driver side ⇒ Rep. gr. 68 ; Re‐  
moving and installing footwell cover on driver side .  
– Unscrew bolt -2-.  
– Remove crash bar -1-, and guide it out towards bottom.  
Installing  
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:  
– Make sure that crash bar is flat.  
Tightening torques
